For as good as the Stony Brook Seawolves have been this season, they?re not even close to running away with the America East Conference. They?re sitting in the driver?s seat as they head up north?to take on the in-state rival Albany Great Danes, who are currently in third-place. The two teams are tied for number one in the ?country in true road wins.
Stony Brook comes in winners of two straight while the Great Danes have dropped their past two contests.
The Seawolves are a defense-oriented team. I?ve seen them a few times and they always manage to make opponents take contested shots with a hand in their face. They rebound extremely well and disrupt offense in the paint, thanks in large part to 6-foot-8 freshman Jameel Warney, who averages 7.6 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. The lunch pail guy for Stony Brook, though, is senior Tommy Brenton, who pulls down 8.4 rebounds, hands out five assists and chips in 8.6 points per game. He plays way bigger than his 6-foot-5 frame. His ?last game out against Maine, Brenton went off for a triple-double (15 points, 14 rebounds, 11 assists). Offensively, they?re pretty balanced, with three players averaging better than 11 points per game.
For the Great Danes, they?re pretty solid on defense as well, allowing only 70.1 points per game and they have to do a good job of holding Stony Brook?s shooters in check. Albany is a very guard-heavy team and their offense reflects that as their guards have accounted for nearly 66% of their scoring this season. Perhaps a quicker, more up-tempo offense is the key to getting a win tonight. Their offense is led by Jacob Iati, one of the top three-point shooters in the college basketball?he?s made 63 three, good for 11th in the country
Both teams can make their free throws and overall are pretty evenly matched, but unless Albany can find an answer for Brenton and Warney, the Seawolves should walk out of the Recreation and Convocation Center victorious.
