Peyton Manning completed 28-of-43 passes for 290 yards and three touchdowns in Denver's stunning 38-35, double overtime loss to the Ravens in the Divisional Round, tossing two interceptions and losing two fumbles.
Just like that, Manning's amazing comeback ends not with his second Super Bowl victory, but further complications to his legacy. Manning was surgical for most of the first half, but was forced to work from behind early after tossing a (tipped) pick six on his first drive. His play deteriorated after halftime, however, where he became increasingly loose with the football and had trouble challenging downfield. Manning was generating little to no drive on his passes, tossing a number of dead ducks. The Broncos' playcalling became extremely conservative, while Manning rarely threw beyond the sticks. It's quite possible he was playing through injury. Manning made a strong case for league MVP this season, but will enter his age-37 offseason just 9-11 all time in the postseason.
Chiefs hired John Dorsey as general manager.
For the third straight offseason, the Packers are losing GM Ted Thompson's right-hand man after Reggie McKenzie took the Raiders' GM job in 2012 and John Schneider became Seattle's GM in 2011. Dorsey will enter a situation more like Schneider's, beginning as second fiddle to powerful coach Andy Reid with a role likely to increase as the years go on. Dorsey has spent 22 years in player personnel. He was Green Bay's Director of Football Operations in 2012.
According to CBS Sports' Jason LaCanfora, impending free agent OLB Paul Kruger is seeking around $8 million per year in his next contract.
Kruger fired his agents this week and is expected to sign with a major firm after posting career highs in tackles (42) and sacks (nine) this past season. With Ed Reed, Cary Williams, and ILB Dannell Ellerbe also scheduled for free agency, the Ravens aren't likely to get into a bidding war to re-sign Kruger, and appear set to let him test the open market. Kruger made just $615,000 in 2012, the final year of his rookie contract.
Falcons CB Dunta Robinson (concussion) and SS William Moore (hamstring) are listed as probable for Sunday's Divisional Round game against the Seahawks.
It's no surprise, as both Robinson and Moore were cleared and returned to practice last week. The Falcons are also expected to have DE John Abraham (ankle) available for Sunday's game. Abraham is officially listed as questionable on the injury report.
Knowshon Moreno was forced from Saturday's Divisional Round game against the Ravens with a knee injury, and is questionable to return.
Players play through in-game "questionable" tags all the time, but the fact that Moreno's injury was announced at all during a playoff game is not a good sign. He's likely done for the day. It means the Broncos are down to rookie Ronnie Hillman ? who's struggled with blitz pick-up and ball security ? FB Jacob Hester and Lance Ball at running back. An every-down back, Moreno had been struggling before going down, but his absence could be glaring in pass-protection.
Jordy Nelson (knee, ankle) and Randall Cobb (illness) are active for Green Bay's Divisional Round game against the 49ers.
As is Jermichael Finley (hamstring). Nelson appears to be the most banged up of Green Bay's three ailing pass catchers, and could be Aaron Rodgers' third or fourth option as opposed to his usual first or second. Nevertheless, the Pack have each of their top four receivers active for just the second time since Week 1. Inactive for the Packers are WR Jarrett Boykin, RB Alex Green, CB Davon House, LB Frank Zombo, TE D.J. Williams, DT Jordan Miller and DE Jerel Worthy. Green's deactivation is a mild surprise, though he hasn't played a snap in his past two games.
49ers RE Justin Smith is active for the Divisional Round of the playoffs, as expected.
The 49ers' Week 19 inactives are QB Scott Tolzien, S Trent Robinson, K Billy Cundiff, RB Jewel Hampton, DL Tony Jerod-Eddie, OG Joe Looney, and NT Ian Williams. David Akers won an in-practice kicking battle during the week and will retain those duties against Green Bay. Smith's effectiveness is a mystery, but he's going to give it a go. Smith is in the starting lineup.
According to the Contra Costa Times, the Raiders have interviewed former Rams head coach Mike Martz for their offensive coordinator vacancy.
The Raiders' current personnel struggles mightily in pass protection, so the potential Martz marriage would seem to be a rough fit barring heavy offseason turnover in Oakland. And the Raiders are cap-strapped due to the financial mess left behind by Al Davis. Per the same report, the Raiders have also contacted Juan Castillo about coaching their offensive line.
