TenCate and BASF sign agreement on strategic alliance for ...

?

TenCate Advanced Composites and BASF have entered into a strategic alliance to cooperate on the development, production and commercialization of thermoplastic composite materials suitable for high-volume vehicle production.

?

The main goal of this partnership is to offer car manufacturers custom-engineered solutions for high-performance composite structures, which enable this industry to further reduce weight and carbon dioxide emission. The growing need of the automotive industry for composite materials used in mass production calls for a rapid development of materials and manufacturing processes.

?

TenCate Advanced Composites has a leading market position in continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites with the TenCate Cetex? product portfolio, currently mainly used for aircraft structures and interiors. At present new aircraft such as the Airbus A380, A350 and Boeing 787 are the main users of such material. BASF is the leading chemical company with an extensive network in the automotive industry. By combining the capabilities of both BASF and TenCate in automotive composite solutions, the required developments will be accelerated.

?

Strategic alliance

In this strategic alliance, BASF will contribute its comprehensive know-how in the production and formulation of thermoplastic resins in order to develop special variants of its Ultramid? (PA), Ultradur? (PBT) and Ultrason? (PESU) product lines. TenCate Advanced Composites joins in with their expertise in composite manufacturing. Together both companies are dedicated to automotive composite materials (UD-tapes, prepregs and laminates) based on these specialty resin systems.

?

?The next major advance in lightweight automotive constructions will not be possible without a dramatic reduction in processing costs. This can be accomplished by using continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites. The breakthrough for composites to mass production, however, has not yet been made. By working together with TenCate, we intend to jointly achieve this breakthrough?, explains Melanie Maas-Brunner, successor to Willy Hoven-Nievelstein and new head of the Engineering Plastics Europe business unit of BASF in Germany.

?

?TenCate Cetex? laminates and prepregs have long been applied in commercial aircraft constructions, and are increasingly used in industrial manufacturing processes. Now, TenCate intends to expand its activities in the automotive industry. We are looking forward to this joint effort in making new materials rapidly available for automotive mass production?, says Frank Meurs, group director of TenCate Advanced Composites EMEA.

?

Advantages of thermoplastic composite materials

Compared to metal parts, fiber reinforced plastic composites can be 30 to 50?% lighter. Thermoplastic composites help car manufacturers economize on the fuel consumption of automobiles and enable the industry to safe costs. Due to the ease of thermoplastic processing, these advanced materials will dramatically reduce production cycle times, have no limitations in shelf life and can be recycled. Thus mass production becomes accessible. Much experience has been built up over the last decades in connection with welding technologies to connect composites materials into complex structures and to integrate these components and structural parts into multi-material end-products. Target applications are semi-structural parts as well as primary structures in car bodies and chassis.

?

Thermoplastic laminates with continuous fiber reinforcement are woven or non-woven fabrics impregnated with resins and formed into sheets, which are extremely light yet very strong. UD-tapes, another product class, make full use of the anisotropic nature of uni-directionally (UD) oriented impregnated fibers. In a second step, these semi-finished products can be formed into more complex parts and overmolded by means of injection molding. This combination results in components that are enhanced by a high degree of functional integration.

Apple unveils iPad Mini, iPad,?iMac and more

8 hrs.

We have found our way to San Jose, to see what Apple meant when it said, "We've got a little more to show you."?Apple CEO Tim Cook took to the stage and presided over an event that launched?a super slim?new iMac, a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display, a Mac Mini ... and?two new iPads.

The fourth-generation iPad is an update to this spring's third-generation?iPad with a?Retina display, featuring a faster chip, the A6X ???delivering faster performance. "I can't see the competition in the?rear view mirror," says senior vice president of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, who came on stage to show off all the new hardware.

There's improved Wi-Fi and, of course, a Lightning connector. The fourth-generation iPad (don't call it an iPad 4!) will cost the same amount as the current one. (No word on whether or not the third-generation iPad will be offered at discount, mind you.) This the first time, at least in recent memory, that Apple updated a core product twice in the same year.

But the bigger deal during this event was the smaller iPad, the iPad Mini. It's 0.68 lbs, and as thin as a pencil (7.2 millimeters).

Apple seems to want to explain the iPad Mini's 7.9-inch screen, in part because it's not a "Retina" display.?It's a?1024 x 768 pixel resolution display, the same resolution as the iPad 2, so all apps look good and work. How does that compare to the 7-inch?Android tablets, particularly Google's Nexus 7, though? With a diagonal screen of 7.9 inches, that translates to a huge total surface area advantage:?21.9 square inches for the competitor, versus 29.6 square inches on the iPad Mini.

The iPad Mini has an Apple A5 chip,?FaceTime HD front-facing camera, a?5MP iSight camera on the?back, LTE cellular?wireless capabilities (in some models), speedy 802.11?A/B/G/N Wi-Fi, and, of course, a Lightning connector.

It's got 10 hours of battery life, just like fourth-generation iPad.

The iPad Mini will start shipping Nov. 2 (for the Wi-Fi only version), and will cost $329 and up. The LTE-enabled model will ship two weeks later.?(See the above pic for all the prices.) You can pre-order the iPad Mini starting on?Friday, along with the fourth-generation iPad.

As far as the rest of Apple's announcements on Tuesday go, the first news of the event was a new version of iBooks, with continuous reading, language support for Japanese and Chinese,?and pages?synchronized across iCloud, so that?? as with?Amazon's?Whispersync???your place is saved no matter what device you're on. You can download the new iBooks today.

After iBooks, Schiller started his stage revue?by revealing a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display: It's got 4 million pixels, four times the pixels of its predecessor.?To put that into perspective, consider that the average HDTV has a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. This means that the new MacBook Pro has almost double the pixels of an HDTV.

The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina display is .75 inches thick?and weighs?3.5 lbs.???much more slender than the older model. There's no optical disc drive, of course.

The base configuration, which you can order today, costs $1699, and comes with a Core i5 dual-core processor, 256GB of memory and 8GB of RAM.?You can custom order it?with?a storage array of up to 768GB of flash memory, and an Intel?Ivy?Bridge Core i7 processor.

Schiller also introduced a new?Mac Mini with a neat removable bottom. A base configuration with a 2.5GHz dual-core i5 processor starts at $599, and a server model is available for $999.

The star of the Mac show was the next-generation iMac, however. It's incredibly thin.

Apple got it so much thinner by laminating the display to the glass. It comes in two sizes: A 27-inch model with a?2560?x?1440 screen and a?21.5-inch version with a?1920 x 1080 screen. Schiller says there's 75 percent less reflection than on?the previous generation, and from what I can tell after using a MacBook Pro with Retina display, that sounds about right.

This new iMac is 8 pounds lighter than its predecessor. Still, it's got all the jacks and speakers and cameras you'd expect.

The key under-the-hood feature is the "Fusion Drive,"?a hybrid drive that has 128GB of Flash memory, integrated with a 1 or 3TB magnetic?drive. The hybrid drive is coded into OS?X, so that your file management is speedy, delivering "nearly the performance of flash," says Schiller.

The base configuration of the new iMac is $1299, and you get a?2.7GHz processor, 8GB of RAM and regular?1TB drive. There's no optical drive on any configurations, just an add-on accessory.?

As usual,?Cook started off the Apple event?by recapping sales of all Apple products.?There was a video of the iPhone 5 sales launch, naming it the fastest-selling phone in history. Next was a recap of iPod sales ? over 3 million of the new ones sold already.?

On to software, where Cook mentioned that iMessages have been sent 300 million times, at a rate of 28,000 per second. 35 billion apps have been downloaded from Apple App Store, and there are 275,000 titles in there that are just for iPad. Developers have made $6.5 billion from selling wares in the App Store.?

You can check out Apple's video recap of Tuesday's event, but pay attention to the system requirements.

Obama or Romney? Let your face vote in our online poll

Lisa Grossman, physical sciences reporter

(Image: Mandel Ngan/AFP/Getty Images)

The US presidential election is just two weeks away, and the official polls are telling a confusing story. Since the first presidential debate on 3 October, the national polls have tilted toward challenger Mitt Romney, while state-by-state figures show a slight lead for President Barack Obama.

But polls are notoriously fickle.

So instead of polling, New Scientist is teaming up with emotional computing company Affectiva to gauge readers' emotional reaction to last night's debate in Boca Raton, Florida - the third and final between Obama and Romney.

Here's how it will work. New Scientist staff have selected several video clips that Affectiva has posted to its website. You can go there now and watch the clips while Affectiva records your emotional reaction in real time (you'll need a web cam for this).

Behind the scenes, Affectiva's Affdex software, based on tools developed by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tracks the texture, shape and subtle movement of facial features such as mouth and eyebrows to recognise happiness, sadness, boredom, disgust or contempt.

The idea is to get an in-depth look at people's reactions to the debate that goes beyond typical polling.

"Most polls would not be able to ask which things really resonated and which didn't," says Avril England of Affectiva, based in Waltham, Massachusetts. "With this scene-by-scene analysis, we'll be able to get that very specific response. If you really watch people through the whole debate, you can get unprecedented insight into their real reactions."

Will it work? How well do people's facial expressions line up with what they say they felt? Does it correlate with how they vote?

You can help find out. Whether or not you watched last night's debate, you can watch the clips here. Affectiva will then compile the results and we will run a follow-up post analysing the data in time for the election, which is scheduled Tuesday, 6 November.

Amish children are twice as physically active as non-Amish children are, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Old Order Amish children are much more physically active and three times less likely to be overweight than non-Amish children, which may provide them with some long-term protection against developing Type 2 diabetes, University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers report in the journal Diabetes Care.

The researchers found that Amish children in Lancaster County, Pa., spent an additional 34 minutes a day in light physical activity, plus another 53 additional minutes a day in moderate to vigorous activity compared to non-Amish white children living nearby on Maryland's rural Eastern Shore. The amount of moderate to vigorous activity, which is important to cardiovascular health, was twice that of the non-Amish children. The level of physical activity was inversely correlated to their BMI, or body mass index, which is a measurement of body fat based on a person's height and weight.

"We know from our earlier research that Amish adults are just as overweight as non-Amish Americans of European origin, but they have half the incidence of Type 2 diabetes," says Soren Snitker, M.D., Ph.D., the study's senior author and an associate professor of medicine and pediatrics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. "This study suggests that the Amish gain their excess weight relatively late in life, which may decrease their long-term risk of developing the disease." The number of years someone is obese is a risk factor for diabetes, irrespective of the person's age and current BMI.

Higher levels of physical activity and lower BMI are both protective against diabetes, Dr. Snitker says. Obesity is a major risk factor for Type 2 diabetes. Dr. Snitker says that while it is unrealistic to imagine that the general public will adopt the Amish lifestyle in its entirety, the study results underscore the need for parents to encourage their children to be more physically active. "We may be able to learn something from the attitudes of the Amish," he says. "Whether children are physically active or not depends a lot on choices their parents make. Do they facilitate physically demanding activities for their children or do they allow them to spend long hours playing electronic games or watching television?"

E. Albert Reece, M.D., Ph.D., M.B.A., vice president for medical affairs at the University of Maryland and the John Z. and Akiko K. Bowers Distinguished Professor and dean of the University of Maryland School of Medicine, says, "As America's children become increasingly overweight, they become more vulnerable to diseases such as Type 2 diabetes. The incidence of diabetes among our young people is rising at an alarming rate. This study by Dr. Snitker and his colleagues offers clear evidence of the benefits of exercise and maintaining a healthy body weight as reflected in the body mass index calculation."

The Old Order Amish in Lancaster County, Pa., trace their ancestry back 14 generations to a small group of Anabaptist Christians who came to Pennsylvania from Europe in the mid-1700s. They don't drive cars or have electricity in their homes and eschew many of the trappings of modern life.

The researchers compared data from 270 Old Order Amish children, ages 8 to 19, from Lancaster County and 229 children from Maryland's Eastern Shore. They measured the children's physical activity by having them wear a device to track their body movement, which allowed them to calculate how much energy they burned as a result of their activity.

Typical Amish children's activities include walking to school, playing with their friends, and performing chores.

"The Amish lifestyle affects the whole family, involving Old Order Amish (OOA) children in household or farming chores from an early age," the researchers note. "OOA children also seem to spend a substantial amount of time in outdoor play with their siblings and neighbors, facilitated by the large size of the OOA Amish nuclear family. OOA children do not use computers or electronic games, nor do they watch television. OOA children attend one-room school houses and almost always go outside for recess. Even the youngest OOA students use active transportation to get to school, generally walking in a group."

By comparison, non-Amish children "almost universally" travel to school and other destinations by bus or car, the researchers say.

The lead authors of the article are Kristen G. Hairston, M.D., M.P.H. and Julie D. Ducharme, M.D., who are both recent graduates of the fellowship program in endocrinology and metabolism at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

The research was funded by grants from the National Institutes of Health (P30 DK072488, T32 AG000219, K01 AG2278), the Geriatric Research and Education Clinical Center at the Baltimore Veterans Administration Medical Center, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and the American Diabetes Association (ADA). The journal Diabetes Care is an ADA publication.

The study is one of a number of studies conducted by University of Maryland School of Medicine researchers using data collected from the Old Order Amish in Pennsylvania. Alan R. Shuldiner, M.D., associate dean for personalized medicine and director of the Program in Personalized and Genomic Medicine at the School of Medicine, and a co-author of this study, operates an Amish research clinic in Lancaster Pa. Over the past 20 years, he and his research team have conducted more than a dozen studies with the Amish, looking for genes that may cause common diseases, such as diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

LSU notebook: Turnovers play a major role in comeback win at Texas A&M

Baton Rouge - There were a lot of unwanted season-highs (or worsts) allowed by the LSU defense Saturday against the dynamic Texas A&M offense. Plays (94). Total yards (410). First downs (26). Passing yards (276).

As tough as all of those stats might be to stomach, one number the Tigers used to trump all those was also a season-high.

Turnovers forced (5).

That number, combined with some effective in-game adjustments and tweaks, was a major reason why and how No. 6-ranked LSU (7-1, 3-1 SEC) rallied to dust the 18th-ranked Aggies 24-19.

"We were on our heels a little bit early because they came out and ran some stuff we weren't prepared for," Tigers safety Eric Reid said. "We knew we had to do something to get momentum and that's when we made some big plays.

"We got some key turnovers and put some points on the board."

Indeed, three of the Aggies' giveaways led to LSU touchdowns and the other two proved to be pivotal as well.

1. Jalen Collins intercepts Johnny Manziel (2nd quarter)

A&M had good field position after Brad Wing's worst punt of the day and was poised to pad a 12-0 lead. This series might've been where the turnaround began, as Barkevious Mingo pressured Manziel into a throw-away on first down, linebacker Lamin Barrow stuffed Ben Malena for a 1-yard loss on second and a switch in pass coverage from man to zone triggered a bad Manziel pass off his back foot that Collins snared.

With the drive kept alive by a pass interference on the Aggies and a fourth-down conversion, LSU pieced together a seven-play, 58-yard touchdown drive that closed the gap to 12-7.

2. Ronald Martin forces a fumble and Barrow recovers (2nd quarter)

The Aggies were facing a second-and-5 because of an offsides penalty and sent Malena off left tackle. He got most of the yards he needed for a first down and was battling for the first down when Martin wrapped him up and yanked the ball free. Barrow won the scrum at the bottom of a pile of humanity to give the Tigers possession at the A&M 41-yard-line.

It was a struggle, but LSU's offense again capitalized when Zach Mettenberger lofted a 29-yard TD pass to Kadron Boone on a slant-and-go route right before halftime.

3. An on-target pass to Mike Evans clangs off his hands and LSU linebacker Kevin Minter snares the carom for an interception (3rd quarter).

Right when the Aggies had seemed to rediscover their offensive rhythm with a pair of first down to fuel a promising drive, Evans made a freshman mistake that affected both teams. On a quick slant, Evans split two defenders and had an open field in front of for a potential huge gain. But he didn't snatch the bullet pass from Manziel and the drive was snuffed out.

The Tigers didn't score off the take-away when a head-scratching series of play calls led to a failed 54-yard field-goal attempt after a penalty, but losing the ball on the interception seemed to take the aggressiveness out of the Aggies' play calling in the next few series.

4. Tharold Simon, after an up-and-down day, delivered a huge play when he jumped a route and yanked a Manziel pass in on the sideline just past midfield (4th quarter).

LSU wasted no time converting, as Jeremy Hill took a simple handoff on the right and plowed through a massive hole on the way to a 47-yard touchdown run.

5. Mingo jumped on a loose ball to slam the door after A&M's dizzying seven-lateral final play (4th quarter).

While the last turnover might've seemed inconsequential, finally coming up with the ball was huge for the Tigers considering the damage the Aggies' skill-position players were capable of -- including Manziel had he gotten the ball back in his hands one last time.

The final tally was 21 LSU points off the five turnovers in a game when the Tigers' offense again struggled to create its own opportunities.

And for A&M, those 21 points proved to be too steep a hurdle to overcome on a day when the LSU's defense clamped down after a difficult beginning.

"Against a very talented team, the margin of error is really, really small," Aggies coach Kevin Sumlin said.

Added A&M receiver Uzoma Nwachukwu, "If you turn the ball over that many times, you're going to get beat."

The 5-0 turnover margin was LSU's best this season and marked the first time the Tigers have won that battle 5-0 since a 51-0 romp past ULM in 2010.

The last time LSU forced five turnovers against an SEC foe was earlier in 2010 when Mississippi State lost the ball that much in a 29-7 loss.

And the last time the Tigers had a bigger turnover margin was the 2007 season opener when they forced seven turnovers (six interceptions) and didn't lose the ball in a 45-0 rout at State.

National recognition

After another solid day to anchor the LSU defense, middle linebacker Kevin Minter was named the Walter Camp Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday.

The national award comes after Minter recorded 12 tackles, two quarterback hurries, a sack and an interception as the Tigers' defense adjusted after a wobbly start against Texas A&M and keyed a 24-19 victory at Kyle Field.

Penalty problems

LSU was flagged a season-high 13 times for a season-worst 103 yards, the Tigers' third game of the season with at least 10 penalties.

Among the penalties were six on the defense; three that gave the Aggies first downs and three offsides calls.

LSU wasn't alone in the penalty department, though.

A week after being called for 19 penalties for 165 yards, A&M was only called for six penalties. But one wiped out a first-quarter touchdown and the other was the pass interference call that prolonged LSU's first touchdown drive of the day.

The first was a text-book chop block when left tackle Luke Joeckel came in for a cut block on Eric Reid when left guard Jarvis Harrison already had him engaged.

The PI was a borderline call on Toney Hurd against Jarvis Landry, but television replays clearly show Hurd had a hand on the receiver's hip/back when the ball arrived.

Hidden hero

Collins' splashiest play was the easily noticed second-quarter interception, but he came through even bigger on special teams in the fourth period.

Right after Drew Alleman connected on a 28-yard field goal for a 17-12 LSU lead with 8:35 left in the game, Trey Williams wiggled through seam on the ensuing kickoff and bolted 76 yards. Collins came from the opposite side of the field, took a great angle and saved the touchdown when he dragged Williams down at the 16-yard-line.

The Aggies gained only 2 yards on three plays and Taylor Bertholet shanked a 31-yard field goal.

Holding steady

LSU stayed at No. 6 in all four polls/rankings released Sunday.

The AP and USA Today coaches' polls pegged the Tigers No. 6, and the Harris Poll and BCS standings -- two key elements in how the BCS bowl participants are selected - also had LSU in the sixth spot.

Hidden meaning?

As vanilla as LSU's offensive play-calling can be at times, there was one stretch Saturday that, at first glance, seemed exceptionally conservative.

Following Manziel's second interception, the Tigers were on the move with a pair of first downs that moved the ball from the LSU 40 to the Aggies' 37. From there, LSU ran three straight plays to the right side, nothing to the outside or with any hint of misdirection.

Those three plays netted minimal gains and got the Tigers to the 32 facing fourth-and-5. As Alleman set up for a field goal, the starting of backfield of Spencer Ware and J.C. Copeland remained on the field, perhaps a sign that a fake field-goal try was upcoming.

However, Copeland was the 12th player on the field, causing a substitution infraction and Alleman was forced to try a 54-yard kick that he missed wide right.

Moving the chains

  • With 12 tackles, Minter notched his second game in the last three with double-digit tackle totals. He has 41 stops in the last three games and 75 this season, one fewer than Reid and Tyrann Mathieu had last season to lead the team.?
  • Saturday's crowd of 87,429 was the first largest in Kyle Field history.
  • Hill's long run vaulted him past 100 yards for the second week in a row, making him the first LSU freshman to do that since Justin Vincent notched four in a row over the century mark in 2003.?

With 251 yards in the last two games, Hill is up to 322 yards, making him the third Tigers' back above 300 this season - Kenny Hilliard leads the team with 420 yards and Ford is second with 357.?

Hill has also not been stopped for a negative rush in 48 attempts this season and ranks second to Hilliard with five rushing TDs.

  • Ford's performance was lost in the shuffle of Hill's day, but the LSU junior delivered the best day of his season with 78 rushing yards on 11 carries.
  • Third down was again vexing for the LSU offense. The Tigers were 2-for-16 against the Aggies and are now 7-for-39 (17.9%) on third down in three SEC road games. LSU converted two fourth downs in two chances Saturday.
  • Boone hauled in a career-high four passes for 49 yards, including his team-high fourth TD reception. Odell Beckham Jr. also snagged four throws for 35 yards, marking just the second time this season LSU has had two players with four or more grabs in the same game this season - the first time in SEC play.
  • Manziel completed 11-of-19 passes for 115 yards in the first quarter and Ben Malena rushed for 50. After that, Manziel was 18-of-37 for 161 yards and Malena rushed for only 32 more yards on seven carries.

Amazon's Cloud Goes Down, Taking Out Reddit ... - Business Insider

frustrated-tired-computers-eyestrainAmazon's cloud went down again today. As we write this, sites like Reddit, Airbnb and Flipboard are fully or partially offline.

Other sites affected including GitHub, Heroku, GameFAQs, Imgur, Turntable, Coursera, Branch, Foursquare and MongoLab.

The problems are with Amazon's East Coast region. Experts say that companies using Amazon should consider spreading themselves across multiple regions. It drives up the costs to use Amazon's cloud but it should also help the site stay open when Amazon fails.

Amazon says its working on the fix right now, according to its status page, which also notes that the outage has been going since about 10:40 Pacific time.

MLS roundup: Idle San Jose clinches top mark

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:20 p.m. ET Oct. 20, 2012

HARRISON, N.J. (AP) - The Red Bulls played a 0-0 tie with Sporting Kansas City on Saturday night, clinching a playoff berth for New York and the Supporters' Shield for San Jose as the team with the best record in Major League Soccer.

New York (15-9-9), which has never won an MLS title, clinched a spot in the 10-team playoffs as Columbus lost 3-2 at D.C. United.

San Jose earned home-field advantage throughout the postseason. The Earthquakes also had the best record in 2005, when they were knocked out in the quarterfinals.

Kansas City (17-7-9) extended its unbeaten streak to 11 games.

Before 25,219, a record crowd at 3-season-old Red Bull Arena, New York pressed the defensive-minded visitors.

KC goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen, who got his 15th shutout, made a diving save on Dax McCarty's 20-yard, left-footed shot in the 23rd minute, and Kenny Cooper sent the rebound over the crossbar.

Nielsen deflected Cooper's rising shot over the bar in the 41st minute. He raised a hand in the 65th to knock down a 12-yard angled shot by Thierry Henry, then had to prevent an own goal when the ball bounced off a defender.

DYNAMO 3, UNION 1

HOUSTON (AP) - Oscar Boniek Garcia and Brad Davis scored in the second half, and the Dynamo clinched a spot in the MLS playoffs.

Houston's victory, coupled with Columbus' 3-2 loss at DC United, means the Dynamo (14-8-11) can finish no worse than fifth in the Eastern Conference and are into the postseason for the sixth time in seven years. Houston extended its home unbeaten streak to 25 games, dating to June 2011.

Philadelphia (10-16-6) had won two in a row.

Garcia put the Dynamo up 2-1 in the 71st minute, taking a pass from Brian Ching, settling it down and blasting one from the top of the arc.

Jack McInerney scored in the 19th minute for the Union.

REVOLUTION 1, FIRE 0

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - Diego Fagundez scored in the 17th minute to lead New England to the victory and end a 196-minute scoreless streak for the Revolution.

Fagundez took a pass from Kelyn Rowe and scored from 30 yards.

Bobby Shuttleworth, dressed in pink for breast cancer awareness month, needed to make just one save in his second shutout of the season for New England (8-17-8), which already has been eliminated from playoff contention.

Chicago (17-11-5) already had clinched a playoff berth.

D.C. UNITED 3, CREW 2

WASHINGTON (AP) - Lewis Neal scored in stoppage time and D.C. United secured its first playoff berth in five seasons.

Marcelo Saragosa and Nick DeLeon also scored for United (17-10-6). The Washington club ran its unbeaten streak to six games and helped eliminate the Crew (14-12-7) from playoff contention.

The win also pushed United's club home unbeaten streak to 16 (12-0-4). United won the last of its four MLS titles in 2004.

Eddie Gaven and Jairo Arrieta each scored their ninth goals of the season for Columbus.

IMPACT 0, TORONTO FC 0

TORONTO (AP) - Toronto FC's winless streak reached 13 games with the scoreless tie in its home finale.

Toronto's last MLS win was a 2-1 victory over Colorado on July 18. It has earned four of a possible 39 points during its lackluster stretch, going 0-9-4 to drop to 5-20-8 on the season.

Montreal's winless run now stands at five after its third straight draw. It's 0-2-3 since a 3-0 victory over D.C. United on Aug. 25.

The Impact (12-15-6) controlled most of the play but could not convert that edge into goals. Marco Di Vaio had two strong chances in stoppage time but his close-range shot hit a defender before a volley bounced high over the Toronto goal.

She's planning her wedding. But she doesn't have a groom. Mamamia

wedding planning 290x385 Fantasy wedding planning. Grooom not required.by NATALIA JASTRZAB

Comrades, let us hope that my boyfriend doesn?t read this. Because it may see him packing his things and moving very, very far away. To somewhere where they don?t have phones. Or email. Or even walkie-talkies.

You see, we are not engaged. Nor close to engaged. The boy has far more pressing things on his plate, such as video games and? video games.

But I still love to take part in a spot of fantasy wedding planning on the odd occasion that I find myself with a bit of spare time. Pinterest is so fun, after all. So is Etsy. Hellloooooo Etsy.

I know that I would like a lot of fairy lights to be involved in my future wedding. I have my dress picked out. Bridesmaids dresses also sorted. Location TBC, although there?s a list of potentials already in my head.

It?s gotten to the point that when ANYTHING vaguely wedding-related comes up in the office, my colleagues say: ?Hey Nat, you can write that. You like that stuff.? (Hence this post.)

But I know I?m not alone. I know girls who have entire desktop folders on their computers dedicated to inspiration images for their future weddings. It?s also a regular topic of discussion amongst my girlfriends (let?s hope that none of their boyfriends read this either).

But none of us have gone to the extent that Anita Chakraburtty?has. She?s booked a date, location, flowers, cake and bought a dress for her wedding. The only thing she doesn?t have? A groom.

Awkward.

This from the Sydney Morning Herald:

anita 380x317 Fantasy wedding planning. Grooom not required.

Anita

As a professional astrologer, the British-born Chakraburtty, 42, says she is destined to meet her future husband any day now.

?Astrologically I?ve got quite a lot of activity happening in October and November in my charts,? she says. She picked the date of the wedding, April 7, 2013, because it has once-in-a-lifetime planetary alignments favouring relationships, she says, and also happens to be her birthday.

?I?ve got a red dress because I?m Aries, a fire sign, and I?ve also bought shoes with diamante on them ? and diamond is the birthstone of Aries,? she says. ?And a friend is making a chilli chocolate wedding cake.?

Chakraburtty, who has lived in Coogee for six years, wants to get married on a hill there, followed by a beach barbecue. Friends and family are planning to come over from Britain for the wedding ?but they?ve told me they aren?t going to book tickets until I at least start dating?.

Chakraburtty, who also works as a naturopath, believes the universe is backing her choice of wedding date. She was a first-time bridesmaid at a friend?s wedding recently and caught the bouquet.

?There are all these signs from the universe, milestones for me to say ?yes, you?re on track?. I really, really know that I will get married on this day and I?m going to meet a brilliant guy in the next few months,? she says. ?I?ve got so much love to offer someone.?

Mostly single for nine years, she denies she is a wedding obsessive. ?I was never this little girl who always wanted to be married and have a big dress. I?ve got a Masters in Chemistry and I was the head of risk in a bank in the UK so I?ve come from a very masculine education and career. I?m like one of the boys.?

We really hope Anita finds herself a husband. But at least if she doesn?t she?ll be able to drown her sorrows with the leftover champagne.

Have you every been guilty of planning a wedding that doesn?t exist? Have you thought about flowers or engagement rings? Have you ever gone to a wedding and though to yourself ?mine would be better?.??

Report: More riders linked to Armstrong's doctor

ROME (AP) ? At least 15 more cyclists have been linked to Lance Armstrong's banned Italian sport doctor in an intricate scheme of money laundering, tax evasion and widespread doping.

Former Giro d'Italia winners Michele Scarponi and Denis Menchov, and this year's Olympic champion Alexandre Vinokourov, are under investigation for doping under the supervision of Dr. Michele Ferrari, the Gazzetta dello Sport reported Friday.

Citing documents from an inquiry led by Padua prosecutor Benedetto Roberti, the Gazzetta detailed how Ferrari allegedly masterminded a $40 million operation where riders and teams avoided taxes by recycling money via Gibraltar, Monte Carlo, Switzerland and South America.

Ferrari and the cyclists deny wrongdoing.

Roberti has been leading a sweeping investigation of Ferrari for several years, parts of which were used in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) report detailing why it banned Armstrong for life and ordered him to be stripped of all seven of his Tour de France titles.

Armstrong has acknowledged that Ferrari was his trainer until 2004, and Ferrari's name is mentioned throughout the USADA report. In July, USADA banned Ferrari for life.

Roberti told The AP last week that his inquiry was nearly finished.

"We need to figure out where the real truth lies in all this," Gianni Bugno, the president of the international cyclists' union (CPA) told The Associated Press on Friday. "There's an ongoing investigation and once the inquiry ends, then we'll see what the situation is."

Doping is a crime in Italy, and Ferrari was already cleared on appeal in 2006 of criminal charges of distributing banned products to athletes. But he remains barred for life by the Italian Cycling Federation under a 2002 ruling.

"Doping is not a cycling problem, it's a problem for all sports," Bugno said. "Ferrari didn't work only with cyclists. He also worked with athletes from other sports."

For example, former Olympic race walking champion Alex Schwazer acknowledged working with Ferrari after it was revealed on the eve of this year's London Games that he tested positive.

Bugno doesn't want to see pro cycling stopped, even momentarily.

"No, we need to move forward. Stopping would hurt the innocent (riders)," he said. "We need to fight against those cheating the system and defend the innocent. ... We're waiting for a response from the UCI (International Cycling Union) on all that has happened. It's the UCI that needs to respond to the USADA report."

Ferrari is reportedly under investigation again in Italy for criminal association, trafficking and administering doping substances, tax evasion and money laundering.

Investigators placed hidden microphones in the camper van that Ferrari used to meet with cyclists in remote areas of Italy and in Switzerland, the Gazzetta said. The newspaper printed a phone-tap conversation between Scarponi and Ferrari inside the van in September 2010 during which the rider said he could win the following year's Giro and the physician replied that if he used a blood transfusion he had a chance.

Scarponi finished second in the 2011 Giro but then was bumped up to champion when Alberto Contador was stripped of the title for doping at the 2010 Tour de France. Vincenzo Nibali finished behind Scarponi.

In 2007, Scarponi was banned for 18 months for involvement in the Spanish doping scandal Operation Puerto.

Police also tapped a September 2010 phone call between Menchov and agent Raimondo Scimone during which the Russian rider tells the agent that he wants "all the cyclists working with him followed by Ferrari," according to the Gazzetta.

Scimone wrote in a statement to the paper that he was never involved in doping or wrongdoing.

Menchov raced with the Rabobank team from 2005-2010 and won the Giro in 2009. He also won the Spanish Vuelta in 2005 and 2007.

Rabobank announced Friday that it is ending its long sponsorship of professional cycling, saying "the trust in the cycling world has gone" following the publication of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's report on Armstrong.

Vinokourov is also reportedly under investigation by Roberti. He won the men's road race at the London Olympics, having served a two-year ban after testing positive for blood doping during the 2007 Tour de France. The Kazakh rider retired at the end of this season.

Others reportedly under investigation are Armstrong's former teammates Yaroslav Popovych and Volodymyr Bileka; Russian riders Alexandr Kolobnev, Vladimir Karpets, Vladimir Gusev, Mikhail Ignatiev; Czech rider Roman Kreuziger; and Italians Filippo Pozzato, Lorenzo Bertagnolli, Giovanni Visconti and Franco Pellizzotti.

Bertagnolli's detailed confession to Roberti was published in the USADA report to reveal Ferrari's system.

Also, riders and teams took advantage of their image rights contracts to limit taxes, the Gazzetta reported, with Scimone helping them work with a company called T&F Sport Management in Monte Carlo to register the deals there and avoid tax.

The contracts were not registered with the UCI and the riders paid only 6 percent tax and then transferred the cash to Switzerland to use it in part for paying Ferrari, the paper said.

How One Guy Raised $1.3 Million for a Tesla Museum

Matthew Inman, creator of the humor site "The Oatmeal," led an online drive that raised over $1 million for a new museum to honor the inventor Nikola Tesla. Inman discusses how to build a successful crowdfunding campaign, and why Tesla is the greatest geek who ever lived.

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

FLORA LICHTMAN, HOST:

This is SCIENCE FRIDAY. I'm Flora Lichtman. If you're listening to our program over the radio today, you have Nikola Tesla to thank. Many of the things we take for granted now - electricity, radar, X-ray technology - come from research done by Tesla about a hundred years ago. But even though he's been come - he's come to be known as the father of the electric age, Tesla died penniless and largely forgotten in 1943.

Skip ahead to present time and enter Matthew Inman, creator of the website The Oatmeal. You may have seen and laughed at his comics, and if you haven't, to get a flavor of them, go to our website at sciencefriday.com to see his one about Tesla. Inman partnered with a nonprofit called the Tesla Science Center at Wardenclyffe on a mission to raise money to buy Tesla's lab in Shoreham, New York, and turn it into a museum. And here's the amazing part: they did it. They raised over $1.3 million from the public to fund a science museum. There's hope yet. Matthew Inman joins me from Atlanta. Welcome to the program and congratulations.

MATTHEW INMAN: Oh, yeah, thanks for having me.

LICHTMAN: Who are these people that gave to your campaign?

INMAN: From what we can tell, they've donated from - I think it was over a hundred countries in terms of geography. It just sort of struck a nerve across the world.

LICHTMAN: Why do you think that is?

INMAN: I think a big part of it was that Tesla as a man is sort of someone that a lot of people, maybe, sympathized with because he's kind of a geek at heart. He's sort of this unsung hero, and he did all of these wonderful things for us and didn't really get much credit during his career. So with this sort of crowd funding campaign, it was almost an opportunity for the world to make it up to him.

LICHTMAN: What drew you to getting involved?

INMAN: I made a comic about him earlier this year, and I sort of rallied this fan base of Nikola Tesla fans. And then I actually was involved in this little lawsuit in June. It was unrelated to Tesla. But as part of this lawsuit, I ended up starting a charity campaign, a crowd funding campaign to raise money for cancer and for the National Wildlife Federation. And it was a huge success. We raised like 10 times the amount of money we needed. Instead of raising 20 grand, we raised $211,000.

So then I heard in August about this real estate in Long Island that was up for sale that was Nikola Tesla's old laboratory, and I figured with my army of Tesla fans on the Internet and my previous experience with crowd funding, I thought I would be the perfect person to come in and see if I could make a difference.

LICHTMAN: Your comic, I think, is titled "Why Nikola Tesla Was The Greatest Geek Who Ever Lived." Would you mind making that case for us?

INMAN: Well, you know, in my opinion, a geek is somebody who obsesses, and who tinkers and who tries to kind of take apart the world - whether that's, you know, in a literal way by disassembling things or reassembling them more in a figurative way by being a writer or a musician or something like that. And Tesla was sort of the embodiment of that. He was almost like a - sort of like a Steve Wozniak, in a way, in that he was kind of this brilliant work horse that maybe early on was a bit naive about money. He wasn't really concerned with that. He was just concerned with seeing what he could do to the world and how he could change it.

LICHTMAN: And didn't quite get the same glory as Edison.

INMAN: He did not, no. He was - he wasn't great at marketing himself, and he wasn't great at making money. He was brilliant. He was a genius, but he was not a businessman.

LICHTMAN: What does the site look like, this old lab of his? Are there things lying around like his tools, or half-eaten bag of chips or something that could be auctioned off?

INMAN: Actually, you know, the property itself is a mess. It's been broken in due by, like, vandals, and it looks like the inside of the Titanic. But I was talking to someone a few years ago, actually who's - who was saying that when they originally - the new - after Tesla lost the land, a film company came in and took it over and was working there, producing film for like 40 years. And a lot of Tesla's old equipment was still there. So what they actually ended up doing with a lot of it was just burying it. So there's actually some people saying that some of his old stuff is still underneath there, including - there's a room and he built some sort of underground residence chamber. I don't know what that means. It sounds impressive, but it might still be down there like this giant, big, crazy Tesla room. So, you know, I don't...

LICHTMAN: That would be exciting.

INMAN: That would be cool to dig out stuff, but I don't know if it's there or not. But it still kind of gives the property a bit of, I don't know, bit of magic.

LICHTMAN: So what's the plan for the property? I mean, you guys raised enough money to build it. I think we're with a grant from New York State too?

INMAN: Yeah, there was a matching grant from New York State. The land was listed at 1.6 million and they had a matching grant from New York State for 850 - 850,000. So we needed to raise 850 in order to buy it. And the nonprofit has officially bought it, and there's quite a bit of money left over. So the plan from here is to take the money we have and to renovate the building, the primary Wardenclyffe laboratory that's still there, and clean the property.

And, you know, it's not enough to make a fully, you know, they have this sort of vision of like a fully functional kind of science center with exhibits that are interactive and all that kind of thing, and we don't have enough money for that, but we don't have enough money to at least get it ready and get started.

LICHTMAN: Are you surprised that you could raise this amount of money for a science museum?

INMAN: For a science museum, yeah. I didn't, you know, it's astounding to me to see people, you know, because I work in a medium where my fans and my readers are very eager to click on things and refresh things and like things and post things. But all those things require is a mouse click. So seeing them raise - I think at our peak we are raising like $27,000 an hour or something.

Seeing them raising that money to basically, you know, restore the legacy of an inventor who's been dead for 70 years was astounding, that they would not only act on it and, you know, on Facebook but they would actually like pull out their credit card and donate was really cool to see.

LICHTMAN: I mean, your site gets something like seven million visitors a month?

INMAN: Yeah.

LICHTMAN: Wow.

INMAN: You know, that audience helps (unintelligible) having those people, you know, kind of at bay, you know, willing to sort of jump in at, like, at my command and help out when necessary. And like I said before, a lot of those people who read my site are also Tesla fans, so that's sort of a double reason for them to be willing to commit to a campaign like this.

LICHTMAN: I mean, just given the amount of sort of Twitter buzz about your appearance on our show, I get the impression that you're a cult figure on the Internet. Do you think you might use your powers of persuasion for other things in the future?

INMAN: I would love to. I'm - I've kind of got, you know, I've been watching for some other great campaign to show up that I could kind of dive in and help. There was one recently that I - by the time I caught it, it was already over. But it was this guy who - he built this plastic air gun that you put salt in it. And it's called the BUG-A-SALT. And it shoots salt high speed, and it can shoot flies instead of swatting them. And it was just like ridiculous but kind of awesome.

(LAUGHTER)

INMAN: And I saw that and I thought that would be kind of a lighthearted fun one to sort of jump in. We'd be like, hey, I like the BUG-A-SALT. Let's all donate so this guy can get his prototype off the ground.

LICHTMAN: Other than that, do you have any projects that you'd like to do?

INMAN: Me personally, not right now. I'm so busy with, you know, I've got...

LICHTMAN: You're promoting a book, right?

INMAN: Yeah, I've got a book going on, and I'm trying to work on some animation stuff. And, you know, and I don't need a crowd-funding campaign to do most of that stuff. It's just me and a couple cups of coffee at home on the computer. So I'm fairly low budget with my needs at the moment.

LICHTMAN: Tell me a little bit about this book before we let you go. It's "How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You"?

INMAN: Yeah. It's basically a collection of funny cat comics ranging from how to tell if your cat thinks it's a mountain lion. There is another one that will show ways to identify if your cat is a raging homosexual. So it's this kind of a mixed bag of weird stuff.

LICHTMAN: News you can use, in other words.

INMAN: Yeah.

LICHTMAN: Thank you for joining us today, Matthew Inman.

INMAN: Yeah. Thanks for having me.

LICHTMAN: Matthew Inman is a comic artist and the creator of The Oatmeal website. Really do check it out. It's hilarious. He's also the author of a new book called "How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You," which is on shelves now.
